The New Organ’s Specification

The new organ will, when it is completely finished, have 1,537 pipes over 4 divisions: (i) Swell (top manual), (ii) Great (middle manual), (iii) Choir (bottom manual) and Pedal.  The Swell will be built inside a large wooden ‘swell box’ with louvred doors/shutters which can be slowly opened and closed by using a pedal on the console. So far, the Great, Swell and Pedal divisions have been completed, plus the Choir Gedackt and Tromba.  The specification will be:

Registration: computerised registration system  with 6 combination pistons to each division, 8 general combination pistons, reversible coupler pistons; 30 memory levels.

The Swell and Great are on restored slider chests with electro-pneumatic action, utilising the original Nelson motors.  The Pedal has three unit chests with 3 ranks – a bass rank at 16′ and 8′; a principal rank at 8′ and 4′ and the 16′ Trombone rank.  The Pedal Bourdon is extended from the Choir Gedackt, the Pedal Bassoon is duplexed from the Swell, and the Trumpet duplexed from the Great. The Choir will also have a unit chest with 4 ranks – Larigot, Clarinet, Gedackt (8′ and 2′) and Principal (4′ and 1′).
